The Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) provides financial support to qualified small and medium-sized enterprises in Canada for innovative research and development and technology commercialization.

This is a nationwide program in Canada and is applicable across all provinces and territories.

Eligibility Requirements:

  • Incorporation and Size: The business must be an incorporated, profit-oriented small or medium-sized business in Canada.
  • Employee Count: The company should have 500 or fewer full-time equivalent employees.
  • Innovation Focus: Commitment to the development and commercialization of innovative, technology-driven new or improved products, services, or processes.
  • Financial Viability: The ability to pursue growth and profit through strategic R&D investments.

Registration Procedure: Applicants must register with NRC IRAP, providing basic company information.

Eligible Expenses: These include salaries and wages (60%-80% coverage) and a portion of contractor fees.

Cost Sharing and Matching Funds: Typically, businesses must provide a part of the project’s funding.

Some Documentation Required: Business Plan OR Pitch Deck, Detailed Project Proposal, Historical Financial Statements (to be provided by your bookkeeper/accountant), Resumes or biographies of key team members, Project Budget outlining how the funds will be utilized, Market Analysis, Commercialization Plan, Technology/Project Overview, Economic Impact Assessment, Proof of Incorporation, Information on Prior Research and Development Activities

Our Fees: Our grant writing services are offered at a flat rate of C$1,500, plus a success fee of 8% on the grant amount awarded upon program approval, not at the time of fund disbursement or reimbursement.

Industrial Research Assistance Program (IRAP) grant funding

Alberta Digital Traction Program

C$1,200 + 8%

The funding is intended to support digital tech companies in Alberta that are focusing on software development. It's aimed at companies looking to increase their customers, revenue, and scale to a global marketplace.

The program provides up to $50,000 in funding.

Eligibility Criteria:

  • Must be an Alberta-based digital tech company.
  • Relies on software development as a core part of your product and/or service.
  • Intends to rapidly scale the digital technology in one-to-two years.
  • Has fewer than 50 full-time employees.
  • Has less than $1,000,000 in annual recurring revenue.
  • Has a minimum viable product ready for market testing.

Application Process: Involves connecting with Alberta Innovates for initial consultation, followed by a submission process through an application portal.

Eligible Expenses: Development Costs, Marketing and Commercialization, Operational Costs, Personnel Costs

Some Documentation Required: Business Plan; Historical Financial Statements (to be provided by your bookkeeper/accountant); Resumes or biographies of key team members; Project Budget/financial projection/pro-forma; A comprehensive proposal detailing the project, its objectives, expected outcomes, innovation aspects, commercialization pathway, and market potential; Proof of Incorporation; Information about the minimum viable product, including its stage of development and any testing or validation that has been completed.

Alberta Innovates Micro Voucher Program

C$500 + 6%

The Alberta Innovates Micro Voucher Program is designed to support early-stage technology and knowledge-based small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in Alberta

The program provides up to $10,000 in funding.

Eligibility Criteria: To apply for the grant, your SME must be based in Alberta, focused on technology or knowledge-based innovation, financially stable, and have the potential to grow and commercialize your technology. Your project should be in the early stages of product development and align with the program's aim to support product research and development, design and engineering, prototype development, product testing and refinement, and similar activities. The grant can be used for eligible expenses such as product development, testing, and market assessment.

Application Process: Applicants must first assess whether they meet the program's eligibility criteria. If eligible, companies must submit a detailed proposal through the Alberta Innovates application portal.

Eligible Expenses: Product Research and Development; Design, Engineering, and Prototype Development; Product Testing and Refinement; Patent Development; Market Assessment; Business/Marketing Strategies; Other Technology Development Activities

Program Documentation required:

  • Business Plan: A clear plan detailing the business, its products, market strategy, and financial projections.
  • Financial Statements: Recent financial statements to demonstrate the company's financial health.
  • Project Proposal: A detailed proposal outlining the specific activities for which funding is sought.
  • Proof of SME Status: Documentation proving the company is a small or medium-sized enterprise based in Alberta.
  • Detailed Budget: A comprehensive budget outlining how the grant will be utilized.
